Editor’s Note 11/07/13: The Urban Hill Climb was cancelled due to safety reasons outside Rollapaluza’s control. Please read their statement here. However we understand that the Urban Hill Climb will be back. So keep checking Rollapaluza’s updates.
The Urban Hill Climb will take place on Thursday 11 July 2013 at Swains Lane in north London.
The race organised by Rollapaluza has gained a legendary reputation amongst London riders since it began four years ago.
It is one of the most interesting and the toughest of hill climbs in London. Riders speak of Swains Lane with respect, because it is a leg-busting climb at a maximum gradient of 18º degrees.
Although Swains Lane is only 1.2km in length, there is no bend to save the riders from agony. But it’s all good fun.
The best Urban Hill Climb time is 00:01:26.92 by Michael Smith of Team Corley Cycles in 2011. No one has broken his record yet.
Swains Lane is situated in Highgate in north London, a gentrified area also known for the nearby cemetery which is the resting place of Karl Marx.
GLUE is sending our reporter, Wheelsucker, to compete in the Urban Hill Climb this year. I hope you can cheer for Wheelsucker, because this is her first bike race. She has competed in other sports before – rowing, taekwondo, running – and she is always training for something.
She will be wearing the GLUE jersey, designed by Holmes.cc studio for our writers.
Thursday 11 July 2013, Highgate, North London. Entrance for riders and spectators are FREE.
